Rime of the Ancient MarinerPublication in collaboration with Jared CoxOnline and in print2023

Jared Cox received his Third Mates License and Great Lakes Pilotage from the Great Lakes Maritime Academy. Nearly every day he took a photo of what he saw or did at work and emailed it to a small group of people, including me and my boyfriend, who is his cousin. Each photo was accompanied by the date, a short caption, and “Love ya guys, Jared.” His emails reminded me that one of my only maritime associations was with a poem I’ve never read, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. I illustrated this edition of Coleridge’s 1798 poem with a selection of images by Jared so I could look at his photos more closely, read something new, and delight him with a printed book of his observations.
