Art + Social Practice Conversations: Take Me With You

This book is a collection of conversations between me and Rita Glazer, former professional letter writer for the United States federal government (and my mother); Laura Moulton, founder of a bicycle-powered mobile library serving people who live outside called Street Books; Jennifer “JJ” Jones, artist who loves talking with strangers and making art in public; Elsa Loftis, librarian connecting artists to information and the library as a place to research and create; Jessica Cline, Supervising Librarian of the Picture Collection at the New York Public Library; Melodie Adams, educator and artist in Portland, Oregon; Eliza Gregory, social practice artist, photographer, educator, writer, and alumna of the Art and Social Practice MFA Program at Portland State University; Dr. Susan Jeffords, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Portland State University; and Nina Katchadourian, artist.

Sometimes conversations feel like a long walk together and the person I’m talking with is taking me somewhere, telling me about their ideas and experiences and pointing out what’s important to them. In my dreams, everyone I interviewed is gathered in one place and I have the honor of introducing them to each other. Until that special day, this collection brings Rita, Laura M., JJ, Elsa, Jessica, Melodie, Eliza, Susan, and Nina into dialogue with each other in my favorite place: a book.

This book is part of the Art + Social Practice Conversations series published by KSMoCA (Dr Martin Luther King Jr School Museum of Contemporary Art). The interviews were previously published online in the Social Forms of Art Journal and collected in this book with new introductions.
