Practice Log 2020–2023

This book is a collection of notes I made about my art projects and practice while I was in the Art and Social Practice MFA Program at Portland State University. Taking these notes began as a way for me to prepare to “check-in” at the beginning of class on Tuesdays. (A “check-in” is an opportunity to share project, practice, and life updates from the previous week with classmates and the instructor.)

My mind went blank during the first few “check-ins” and I couldn’t think of anything to report even though I knew I had done many things related to my practice. Then I started writing notes about what I did during the week and using them as reminders for what I could share with the class. Eventually, I came up with template that made it easy for me to record what I read, watched, looked at, noticed, experienced, and realized. These things often seemed irrelevant when I noted them but now that they are collected in one place, I see connections between my initial curiosities, preliminary research, and the resulting projects.
