At State and Pearl

A book promoting Albany, New York, At State and Pearl was originally published in 1916 and I re-printed almost 100 years later. This forgotten civic gem was discovered and shared online by my friend Matt from Albany Archives. After I read it, I knew it had to be available again. After I confirmed its public domain status I put it back into reader’s hands by printing it locally and distributing it to gift shops (including in the Empire State Plaza which serves the New York State Capital), book stores, and the Albany Institute of History and Art.

Over the span of sixteen pages, ten poems and photographs, author David Mitchell Kinnear expresses the joyous hustle and bustle at the downtown intersection of State and Pearl Streets, "the pivot and center of Albany's whirl." It seemed to me that the book celebrated the same aspects of Albany and upstate life that I sought to share in my weekly radio show, Hello Pretty City, and my own independently published zines. Its joyous tone and low price appealed to a community interested in reconnecting with its past which resulted in the book being reprinted three times to keep up with the demand.
